"Circular Economy for the SDGs", virtual side event at the UN ECOSOC 2024 Partnership Forum

With a special invitation from the AlterContacts, special consultant to ECOSOC, from 2022, CRLDS became part of the Virtual Side Event at the United Nations Partnership Forum ECOSOC 2024.

The "Circular Economy for the SDGs" virtual side event at the UN ECOSOC 2024 Partnership Forum, co-organized by UNCTAD and AlterContacts, highlighted the circular economy as a framework for achieving SDGs. The event focused on key SDG targets, emphasizing resilience, agricultural productivity, climate action, and global partnership. UNCTAD experts identified opportunities in multi-stakeholder cooperation, mindset change, and the need for capital mobilization.

Our Center, CRLDS, proudly participated in the third summit of the Network of Balkan Cities B40 held in Tirana from January 29 to 31.

This gathering convened 54 mayors from the Balkan region and various stakeholders, highlighting the paramount importance of collaboration and solidarity among local governments.

Under the overarching theme, "Building Urban Resilience and Responding to Crises," the summit underscored the need to fortify cities and establish effective crisis response mechanisms.

Key focal points included local climate initiatives, economic and cultural collaboration, democratic governance, smart cities, and digital transformation.

The intensive week of FORLED 2023, December 12-16, 2023, organized and hosted by the Center for European Policy Studies for Regional and Local Development, concluded in a wonderful way with the "Debate on the City" column, where Prof. Perpaim Kabo, philosopher, anthropologist, author and dedicated intellectual.

✅The brilliant lecture of Prof. Kabos, for two hours held the attention of the quality audience: intellectuals, professionals from various fields, students, members of the municipal council. This important event was appreciated by the Prefect of the Vlora District as well as the Chairman of the Vlora District Council.

It was a very good idea to organize during FORLED 2023, in the premises of Hotel Kraal in Vlora, a Friendly World Café with young people on the theme "Active young citizens for sustainable development in the Western Balkans", during FORLED 2023. This provided a nice forum for open discussions and innovative ideas.

Several questions were posed to them:

1. How can young people contribute to the sustainable development of their city/area?

2. In your opinion, what are the main challenges for sustainable development in the Western Balkans?

3. What initiatives can be taken by the youth community to improve their environment?

4. What are the main needs of your community that can be addressed through young citizens' projects?

The 5th edition of the Regional and Local Economic Development on Western Balkans+ Forum -FoRLED 2023  held on 12-15 December 2023 in the city of Vlora.

The 5th Western Balkans+ Regional and Local Economic Development Forum - FoRLED 2023, was a four-days event on regional and local economic development policy in the Western Balkans organized by CRLDS Albania, in partnership with the European Academy of Regions, The University Ismail Qemali of Vlora and the Regional Council of Vlora, including relevant regional and international stakeholders, resulting in regional and local policy recommendations.

We as CRLDS participated last week in the Conference "European Climate Stocktake, invited to an open discussion with high-level policymakers from the European Union and across the world, as well as speakers representing a range of stakeholders including international organizations, business, NGOs, academia, youth and others.
The Conference "European Climate Stocktake - EU and global progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement", was an event to reflect on the EU and the world’s progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement.
The event aimed to contribute to the discussion in the run-up to the Global Stocktake, the UNFCCC’s first review of the global progress made in implementing the Paris Agreement, which will conclude at COP28 in November.

It was a pleasure for us as CRLDS to join today in United Nations Day, the event on the topic: "HIGHER EDUCATION AND MULTILATERALISM: TEACHING AND RESEARCHING ABOUT THE UNITED NATIONS".
This online panel discussion, organised by  UNAI, aimed at highlighting the teaching and research innovations, methodologies, modalities, and projects related particularly to the United Nations and its work, carried out in academia, while underlining the critical relevance of higher education to actively promoting and working in favor of, the goals enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

CRLDS joined on 10 July 2023 together with partners of UNSDGLearn, for a virtual side event, during the 2023 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) - New York, USA - with the following theme: "UNSDGLearn: A UN initiative + transforming skills and mindsets for sustainable development.”

The main focus of the event was on the importance of education in driving change and empowering individuals for sustainable development. The UN SDG: Learn Partnership, which aims to improve access to quality learning opportunities around the world and promote sustainable and inclusive development, is an example of the One UN+ approach to addressing this challenge that no single entity can coped alone.

Reflecting on the Role of Positive Energy Districts on the Road to Climate Neutrality. Positive Energy Districts – or elements of the PED concept – have been integrated into both national and municipal policies and strategies.

During the month meeting of board of Directors of European Academy of Regions on October 13, Mrs. Luiza Hoxhaj, Executive Director of CRLDS, as a board member present the details about "FoRLED 2023 - Forum on Economic Regional and Local Development in Western Balkans+", that will held from 6 to 9 December 2023 in the City of Vlora.

CRLDS as the member of  the European Association for Local Democracy - ALDA  have been part of  an informal brainstorming meeting, to find out our understanding of the Albanian landscape, interests and needs relating to the topic of local democracy and citizens participation with aim to be more inclusive process and taking into consideration ALDA’s members and partners needs in Albania. 

Under a joyful atmosphere and enthusiastic discussions about the future of the center and its contribution to the positive developments in the city of Vlora, the new operational office of CRLDS in Vlora officially opened with a breakfast meeting in the presence of its staff and collaborators in the city of Vlora.

 

CRLDS, as an associate partner of the REAL DEAL project met in Brussels with more than 60 civil society organizations (CSOs) from across Europe and beyond for the fifth edition of the "Civil Society Forum on Sustainability: Building the Agreement on European Green" on June 26 and 27, 2023. During two days, CSOs with an interest in just transition, consultative democracy, social justice and environmental sustainability discussed together the future of the European Green Deal and the 2030 Agenda

Organized by the REAL DEAL project, the Civil Society Forum is a space for CSOs and other stakeholders from across Europe to come together and exchange views on the European Green Deal (EGD), the EU's strategy for make Europe climate neutral by 2050.

In the framework of the REAL DEAL Project, today 6 July 2023, we participated as an associated partner in the webinar: "Communicating the European Green Deal beyond your home base", where we delved into the essential aspects of effectively delivering the Agreement European Green. (EGD) for different audiences. The EGD is a comprehensive plan that aims to achieve climate neutrality in Europe by 2050 and successful communication is key to garnering support and commitment from policy makers, business leaders, civil society organizations and the general public.

CRLDS - Center for European Policy Studies for Regional and Local Development in cooperation with ALDA - European Association for Local Democracy are pleased to invite you to the P-CUBE Pilot Test, scheduled for July 20 at 11:00 (CEST), a possible joint collaboration for an event related to the activities of the P-CUBE project [1].

Admission to the Pilot Test will be allowed up to 10 minutes before the start of the Meeting.

Executive Director of CRLDS Dr. Luiza Hoxhaj, participated in the UNAI SDGs Workshop "Advancing Refugee Inclusion Through the 2030 Agenda".

This workshop, co-hosted with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Global Academic Interdisciplinary NetworK (GAIN) to mark World Refugee Day, emphasized the contributions of academia in fostering refugee inclusion and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.

Last week, the UN in Albania and the Embassy of Sweden in Albania organized a 2-day Conference on empowering Albanian companies for sustainable action.
Executive Director of CRLDS, Luiza Hoxhaj, joined as a panelist this important forum with high-level company representatives, government, EBRD and other organizations to discuss the current business practices in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Albania.
The Conference embraced a wide range of topics by covering sustainability from every aspect - from sustainable fashion and textile, organic farming and ♻ circular economy to sharing experiences and best practices by Albanian and Swedish businesses.

During 2 days CRLDS participated in the Regional Forum of NGOs on the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, held in Belgrade, Hotel Mona Plaza, 29-30 March 2023, organized by the Regional Cooperation Council and the EU4Green Project, supported by DG Near, with the presence of the General Secretary of RCC Mrs. Majlinda Bregu and many European and regional actresses.

It was  pleasure to be part of the High Virtual Roundtable organized by the World Ocean Council (WOC) on the High Seas Treaty today on 22 March 2023.

The world’s governments have finalized an historic agreement on protecting marine biodiversity in international waters — the treaty on Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) — after nearly 10 years of negotiations.

This week our Executive Director of CRLDS, Luiza Hoxhaj, was the pleasure of being part as a panelist on the 8th European Congress of Local Government (Economic Forum) in Mikolajki, Poland, 6-7 March 2023 with main theme: "New Solidarity for a New Era". 
After the plenary session on the second day of work She had the opportunity to speak on the panel with the topic: "The Role and Current Challenges of European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation". The panel was preceded by a presentation by the Mayor of Milanowek, introduced by Angelika Swoboda.
 

We are pleased to announce that the application of Dimal Municipality in partnership with CRLDS as a facilitator of startups that will be supported by the government with grants has been successful among more than 350 applications presented. The winning applicants managed to score over 80 points, and the committee approved the funding level for the applications of 23 startups and 29 startup facilitators.

Such a competition is being held for the first time in our country,  with a grant of 10 million euros, based on some elements international models, which are considered the capitals of the world in terms of startups, in support of new initiatives that have as the goal of technological development in the country.

On the 6th of May, CRLDS held its final local stakeholders meeting of the ACHIEVE project.

In the framework of ALDA General Assembly and side events (5-8.05.2022), CRLDS, in the capacity of ALDA member is participating in the Final Conference of the GEM IN Project, which is taking place today on May 5, 2022, from 09:00 - 17:00 in the premises and Maison de la Région Grand-Est, Strasbourg, in hybrid format.

The aim of the project "Game to embrace intercultural education" - GEM IN is to support intercultural education in school and in informal youth environments as a tool to promote social inclusion, intercultural dialogue and active citizenship by promoting European values.

Final event  of the project ACHIEVE (Awareness of Common History for Identifying and Extending the Values of Europe):   “Bored of Borders” took place from the 4th to the 5th of April in Vicenza, Italy. Organised by Istituto Rezzara, the meeting was held in a hybrid mode allowing all the partners, 14 from 13 different countries, to join the event.

With great enthusiasm, the EUCED Governing Board, its team and staff welcomed our center as a new Associate Member.

 We are also pleased to announce that EUCED has appointed Luiza Hoxhaj, our Executive Director, its new Representative in Albania as Regional Vice President.

Last week was intense for the European Policy Study Center for Regional and Local Development.

It started with the development of the online seminar, held on 29.03.2022: "Education for global and sustainable citizenship", by Luiza Hoxhaj, in the framework of the Achieve project, funded by the European Commission, under the Europe for Citizens Program .

In the current system, a paradigm shift is needed. There is a need for personal interests to converge towards the collective interest; it is necessary to combine criticism with the practice of transformation, that is, to act to transform reality.

3rd International Event of the Project

 ACHIEVE “Awareness of Common History for Identifying and Extending the Values of Europe” Project partners (CRLDS is one of the partners) meeting will take place in Peja, Kosovo*.

On the agenda: meeting with Mayor Gazmend Muhaxheri; workshops among partners on several topics, from updates of the project itself to “Euroscepticism” and more.

The even will take place on 05-07 December 2021.

We are ready to start the second edition of the Institute for Women and Girls in Security and Peace. Participants were selected and represented by women and girls from civil society, Albanian and international institutions as well as from academic institutions.

The Institute for Women and Girls in National and International Security Policy seeks to promote a more sustainable, peaceful and just world by focusing on the important role that women play in preventing conflict and building peace, growing economies and addressing threats. global issues such as climate change and violent extremism.

Today, 14/02/2020, with the senators of the Kemal Ataturk High School of Vlora, will be the closing activity of the first phase of the series of local activities developed in the framework of the ACHIEVE Project.

The preliminary results of the national and European identity survey will be in focus.

From the 19th to the 21st of February in the Big Hall of the National Minorities House in Prague the second international activity of the Achieve Project was held, where CRLDS was part as partner.

 On the first day of the meeting, one representative of each country made a brief presentation of the territory consisting of three aspects: general characteristics of the territory, elements representing the territory's identity related to art, history, music, dance, gastronomy , typical products, religion, and how the cultural heritage of the territory is recognized by their own inhabitants.

Dr. Svetlana Titini introduced about three representative elements of our identity: Folklore, Food and Religion.

As we come to the end of 2019, it is the right time of year to reflect and start planning for a new year ahead. It would be precisely this objective of the working breakfast, organized by CRLDS with its Board of Directors, the Staff, Associates and Partners, today in the premises of CRLDS headquarters. CRLDS Albania participated in the JPI Urban Europe AGORA Workshop "Dilemmas of Public Space" held in Riga from November 20 to 22, 2019.

On November 19th, we started AGORA's activities in Riga with a kindly Tour / WALKshop around the city of Riga, with a particular focus on public space projects implemented in the city of Riga and in the peri-urban areas, organized by local hosts.

On the second day of the event, 20 November, Mrs. Luiza Hoxhaj presented the paper "Management of Cities and Public Spaces, the Case of Albania".

The Latvian Ministry of Education and Science and the Latvian State Education Development Agency, the hosts of activity, invited the participants of Agoras for a joint dinner on November 20th.

On the fourth day of the “Institute for Girls and Women in National and International Security Policies” 15 trainees selected to participate in the program, after attending all training sessions, took an active part in them and fulfilled all the obligations of the program. presented in front of a committee comprised of members of the CRLDS organizing team, academic teaching staff and a senior representative from the US Embassy in Tirana their in-depth work. Level of presentations, variety of topics chosen by them, individuality and thematic complementarity, thus complementing a wide range of topics that will be part of future research projects designed by them were impressive. 

We all know that a deep knowledge and comprehension of history, both from a local and a global point of view, is fundamental to understand the present world and to walk towards a better tomorrow. What is equally important is the awareness that, apart from national narrative, very often different countries share much history in common, in terms of social, political and cultural processes.

The competition for the official logo of the Second Vlora Forum on Regional and Local Economic Development, in the Western Balkans countries, to be held in Vlora on 24-27 October 2017, was launched today on 28 August.

The Forum is organized by the Center for European Policy Studies on Regional and Local Development and the European Academy of Regions, with the support of the Vlora Municipality, the Vlora Region and the Government of Flanders. 

Like today, on 25 March 1957, the representatives of six states Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherland and, at that time, West Germany, signed two treaties in Rome, establishing the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM).

Treaties of Rome represent the cornerstone of the modern Europe. On one hand, a common market has been created, symbolised by four freedoms: free movement of people, goods, capital and services. On the other hand, joint research in the field of atomic energy for peaceful use began. As a result, the citizens of the European Union enjoy one of the highest living standards and, most outstandingly, live in a peaceful area.

On a joint board meeting between EAR-AER and CRLDS (Center for Regional and Local Development Studies Albania), held in Tirana on October 10th, both organisations agreed that CRLDS will from now on represent the European Academy of the Regions in Albania.

The Center CRLDS develop on 26 May 2016 in Hotel Tirana International, in Tirana the Public Lecture: "Mother Teresa: Challenges of the study before and after the canonisation ", by Dr Gezim Alpion, of Birmingham University, UK.

This activity, as part of the "Heaven is in our hands", part of the section : International Lecture of the Center (Cail), in a combination with its "Meet AlbTalents Project", and brings for the second time In Tirana Dr Gezim Alpion, after the first Public Lecture: "Why Albania needs for the public intellectuals?".

Abstract

Four years ago, on 04/05/2012, the Centre for European Policy Studies on Regional and Local Development started officially its journey. Within these four years, the Center has grown, has expanded operations and associates. It has established partnerships with key stakeholders, at national and international levels, from the public and private sector, from the academic world or from the field of research and in the field. We have become part of various European programs such as "Europe for Citizens", "Erasmus +", "Territorial Cooperation", "Interreg Europa", ect ,. We have participated or we have been part, as partner, in organizing various international conferences, in various scientific and cultural seminars or events.

It is a great pleasure for us to announce that the project called "Democratic Engagement and Civic Participation", funded by the European Commission, under the Program: Europa for Citizens has won approval.

As already is written in the program of activities of the project the first event will be the "Saint George Days Festival", between April 22-24 in the Saint George City, there will be various cultural events, arts and craft fairs and Cultural Garden. The program will also include the national and international performers. The event of Saint George days will to be a community celebration.

Today on 02.11.2016 was signed in Tirana, in the grounds of CRLDS, the Cooperation Agreement between EiPass Albania and CRLDS. The agreement was signed by Mrs. Luiza Hoxhaj in the name of CRLDS and  by Ms. Anila Gusho for EIPASS. In this way CRLDS Albania joins the EIPASS innovative entrepreneurship in beautiful journey towards innovation and the spread of digital culture, a process that is at the center of the "Europe 2020 Strategy" and "National Digital Agenda". Providing certificates EIPASS, further from CRLDS is a sure passport, which enables to be an integral part of intelligent development in our country.

Social and economic development of a country is closely related to information and communication technologies (ICT), known as the technology of general interest. ICT and broadband technologies offer the potential to overcome many unique challenges and constraints that characterize traditional rural economy. TIK is increasingly playing an important role in economic and social development of the country.

At the conclusion of the proceedings of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) (Developed in Tirana on 18-19 February 2016), was held a bilateral meeting  between the Centre CRLDS Albania, represented by Luiza Hoxhaj and CSE Crescendo Milan ( PAM's adviser), represented by Cesare Sarcedoti (CEO of CSE). At this meeting they discussed the further advancement of our three-year collaboration, which already rose to the level of partnership.

We are happy to share with you the pleasure of signing, today in 01/26/2016 of the Cultural, Educational and Scientific Memorandum of Understanding between CRLDS Albania and Sustainable Development Management Institute, France.

The center will take part in the fourth event Docpie Project, in the quality of partner organization....

Public lecture:  Why does Albania need “public intellectuals”?

The CRLDS Center Albania is pleased to announce and to invite you to its next activity:

The center will organize Workshop on the topic: Promoting effective VET/AE/LLL approaches aiming at employability in strategic investment projects

A final evaluation of the RDP is being carried out by independent evaluators, as foreseen in the work plan of the RDP. The evaluation began mid-January and its final report will be available by the beginning of March 2015.

Rationale of the Workshop: Our center organizes in the dates 19-20 December workshop with the theme: "The Role of Social Partners in Establishing a National Qualification Framework for TVET/Life Long Learning"
